Invasion speeds in uctuating environments

چکیده
Biological invasions are increasingly frequent and have dramatic ecological and economic consequences. A key to coping with invasive species is our ability to predict their rates of spread. Traditional models of biological invasions assume that the environment is temporally constant. We examine the consequences for invasion speed of periodic and stochastic £uctuations in population growth rates and in dispersal distributions.

متن کاملLinear spreading speeds from nonlinear resonant interaction∗
We identify a new mechanism for propagation into unstable states in spatially extended systems, that is based on resonant interaction in the leading edge of invasion fronts. Such resonant invasion speeds can be determined solely based on the complex linear dispersion relation at the unstable equilibrium, but rely on the presence of a nonlinear term that facilitates the resonant coupling. We pro...
متن کاملDevelopmental stability and environmental stress in natural populations of Drosophila pachea
We examined the relationship between developmental stress and ̄uctuating asymmetry in a natural population of Drosophila pachea, a cactophilic fruit ̄y. Cactus host variation was found to exert signi®cant in ̄uence on the size of legs and of wings of emerging adults, but stressors associated with reduced size did not show the predicted increase in ̄uctuating asymmetry for either leg or wing length....
متن کاملAre Anomalous Invasion Speeds Robust to Demographic Stochasticity?
Two important issues for conservation are the range expansion of species as a result of climate change and the invasion of exotic species. Being able to predict the rate at which species spread is key for successful management. In deterministic models, the invasion speed of a polymorphic population can be faster than that of any of the component phenotypes, and these "anomalous" invasion speeds...
متن کاملSpreading speeds in slowly oscillating environments.
In this paper, we derive exact asymptotic estimates of the spreading speeds of solutions of some reaction-diffusion models in periodic environments with very large periods. Contrarily to the other limiting case of rapidly oscillating environments, there was previously no explicit formula in the case of slowly oscillating environments. The knowledge of these two extremes permits to quantify the ...
